France wants all light shed on report Damascus used chemical weapons

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) France said on Monday that the Organisation for Prohibiting Chemical Weapons (OPCW) must more than ever "shed light on the use of chemical weapons" in Syria after fresh reports the regime used such weapons on May 2-3.

"Information states that a deadly attack on May 2-3, near Idlib, northwest Syria, took place," a Foreign Ministry statement said here, adding that the attack used aerial means to deliver the chemical weapons.

Syria has been several times accused of using chlorine in its battle against opposition groups but civilians have also been reported to be widely affected by this chemical substance.

"This chemical attack, if it is true, would confirm that the Damascus regime is not conforming to its international obligations and is acting in violation of resolution 2118 of the United Nations Security Council, as well as (violating) resolution 2209, adopted March 6, which condemns the use of chlorine in Syria," the French statement observed.

The OPCW is charged with ridding Syria of its chemical weapon stocks and its manufacture and delivery systems and has largely rid the country of Sarin gas and hardware capable of delivering the gas.

"The pursuit of the (OPCW) fact-finding mission...to interdict chemical weapons, which France strongly supports, is more than ever necessary to shed light on the use of chemical weapons on Syrian territory. Those responsible should be brought to justice," Paris remarked.
