(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Qatar and France signed here on Monday a deal worth a 6.3 billion euro (USD 7.02 billion) for the sale of 24 Rafale fighter jets to boost capabilities of the Qatari army.
This came during official talks held between Qatari Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and visiting French President Francois Hollande in which the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation relations and the ways of developing them in all fields to serve their strategic ties, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.
The two leaders also exchanged views on the region's current issues and the latest developments on regional and international arenas of mutual interest, the QNA said.
The two countries welcomed the deal, expressing that they intend to develop a joint partnership in order to boost capabilities of the Qatari army, said a joint statement by the two sides.
The two leaders underlined the importance of keeping peace and stability in a world suffering from several crises, the statement said, adding this is the second official visit of Hollande to Doha, in response to an invitation by Sheikh Tamim.
The visit affirms the depth and solidness of strategic partnership between the two countries, it said, noting the trip is a new and ambitious push for bilateral ties, especially in the fields of defense, security, economy and tourism.
According to the statement, President Hollande congratulated Qatar on hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup, noting the two leaders welcomed the signing of a framework agreement of joint cooperation for preparing for the big event.
France will support Qatar for the event in the field of field safety and security as they inked an agreement last year in this regard, it made clear.
Sheikh Tamim and President Hollande underlined their eagerness to develop their countries' bilateral investments, it said, adding they also agreed on boosting financial partnership.
