Kuwait Holds Religious, Ethical Teaching Programs For Inmates

(MENAFN- Arab Times) The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has established the Islamic Studies Department to supervise various programs and courses for memorization of the Holy Book, the Quran, addressed to various nationals including prisoners. Scholars, running Islamic guidance centers, including makeshift ones set up within prisons' compounds, hold special Quranic courses and educational programs about Islam as a doctrine.

Such centers have been set up at prisons and correction houses to guide the delinquents abide by correct religious principles and rid themselves of the trends of doing evil deeds. Ahmad Al-Taweel, the director of Holy Book department at the ministry, told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that a special team of religious guides and scholars hold religious and ethical educational courses at the correction facilities, also aiding, guiding and educating drug addicts.

The ministry has organized the nightly "Al-Rashad" courses to teach the Quran for some 100 prisoners at the central prison. A morning session is addressed to 250 drug convicts. Special courses, due for eight months, are organized for the drug addicts held behind iron bars. Those who succeed in passing the course are qualified for an Amiri pardon. The ministry teams of scholars hold a year-long course for the wrong-doing adolescents behind bars, aimed at helping them get rid of the delinquent behaviors.

Reports are made, assessing how the participants in the course interact and succeed in correcting their behaviors. These reports are referred to the public prosecution for examination. Some of these courses are intended to aid inmates in resolving family and financial problems.

The assigned teams organize regular Umrahs (lesser pilgrimages to the holy sites), special sports courses, cultural contests and recreational camps. At "Al-Hidaya Center" at Talha prison, founded in 1997, Al- Taweel told the Kuwaiti news agency that up to 60 religious guides work there, aiding the inmates to memorize the Quran, teaching them recitation and various doctrinal lessons.

At the women prison, the ministry set up the morning-time "Al- Rashad" makeshift center in 2005 and "Al-Huda" center for the juveniles in 2003. The assigned teams there teach the imprisoned girls and women various Quranic, religious and ethical studies.
