Gender crimes

(MENAFN- Arab News) This is with reference to the report 'Indian sex attack victim's family demand arrest' (May 3). It is sad to note the hike in the number of sexual attacks on women in India. As a matter of fact gender crimes are on the rise across the world and India is no exception. But the manner in which women are being treated in the incidents reported from India calls for an in-depth analysis of the situation. There is a great need for assessing the situation from all possible angles.

I believe that the Indian media should also be blamed for the situation. It seems that too much freedom is not healthy for a society. Most of the countries which claim to be too liberal are facing a hike in gender crimes. Both too much restrictions and too much liberty is not good for any society. We should try to adopt a middle path. The social issues we are faced with are a direct result of abandoning our religious values. Every religion teaches its followers to respect womenfolk. The problem arises when we mix traditional practices with religious values. We can witness this trend in almost every country around the globe. Even among Muslims we sometimes give preference to our cultural norms over Islamic teachings. It is very sad. The only way to fight this problem is to stick to the divine teachings.

As far as India is concerned I think that the Indian authorities should enforce strict laws to fight this menace and people found guilty of rape should be severely punished. Yasir Nawab Dammam
