Minister of Labour Opens Workers Rights Conference/2/


(MENAFN- QNA) Al Khulaifi said that the Ministry, out of its keenness on care for workers, and in order to receive complaints, opened complaints offices in all areas of the State, together with the main office in Doha in order to facilitate the submission of complaints by workers who work outside the city of Doha to get early rules, calling on workers to make complaints through the branches of the complaints offices provided by the Ministry of labour and Social Affairs' Department of Labour Relations in various areas of the State.

He also referred to the hotline provided by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs to receive complaints so that usual measures are taking vis-a-vis such complaints, in addition to the implosion of penalties on companies that forces labourers to work at noon hours during the period from June to August annually.

Al Khulaifi said "the State of Qatar is about to take many measures to improve the conditions of guest workers, ensure their different needs of modern housing complexes and advanced and balanced legislations that maintain the rights of workers and employers. In order to enact labour legislations to maintain workers right provide protection to them at the workplace, significant amendments to the Labour Law No. 14 of 2004 have been approved to include the protection of wages. According to those amendments, companies shall be obliged to transfer workers' salaries to their bank accounts, partnership corporations or transfer them to their accounts at their countries of origin, the Minister said.

He added that the new amendments stipulate that dues shall be given at a specific date and that fines shall be imposed on violating employers as all wages shall be paid through bank transfers and employers are required to transfer wages within seven days after the due date and in case of breaches the Minister shall have the authority to stop any new work permits and to stop all transactions of the violating employer.

The Minister of labour and Social Affairs said the huge numbers of workers and their families who came to Qatar to contribute to the development process in the State, would not have come without being sure that they will be well treated and that they could earn by their hard work more than they can get in their countries.

He drew the attention to a recent study conducted by academics at the University of Chicago and showed the role of the State of Qatar and the Gulf Cooperation Council in raising the standard of living of people in labor-exporting nations and that the State of Qatar plays an important role in reducing income inequality and realizing fairness of its distribution in the world. That is not surprising as 85% of workforce in Qatar are temporary labours who transfer the biggest portion of their income to their countries of origin, thus provide quality health services and better education for their families.
