Nepal quake death toll exceeds 7,000

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The death toll from last week's 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal and its aftershocks has reached 7,040 persons, with some 14,000 people reported injured, according to Nepal's National Emergency Operation Center on Sunday.

One week after Nepal was struck by its deadliest earthquake in over 80 years, hopes of detecting more signs of life among the ruins have all but disappeared, as the focus shifts to reaching survivors in far-flung areas who have yet to receive relief supplies.

Tremors following the earthquake could also be felt in neighboring India, Bangladesh, China and Bhutan.

The United Nations estimates that more than 3 million people in Nepal are in need of food assistance, and nearly half of those need immediate help. Further, emergency funding of $415 million is being sought, the United Nations said.
