The food scandal occurred in 2013 which made a significant impact on noodles especially plain noodles. Unbranded fresh noodles widely sold in wet markets were found contaminated with hazardous substances such as oxalic acid and tinopal. As a result many people decided to replace fresh noodles with plain noodles or instant noodles. This change in consumer behaviour supported the growth of noodles especially plain noodles in 2014.

Competitive Landscape

Acecook Vietnam JSC led sales in 2013 and 2014 thanks to its continuous efforts to ensure the high quality and food safety of its products. Acecook Vietnam is considered one of the most prestigious instant noodles companies in Vietnam. In December 2013 at a food safety seminar held in Ho Chi Minh City it was announced that 100% of instant noodles samples were found to contain oxalic acid a cause of kidney stones. Acecook Vietnam was the first and only manufacturer to confirm that oxalic acid was not  used in the production of their products.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period healthier types of instant noodles such as rice-based or non-fried ones are expected to thrive. The main barrier to these products is the price. While Nissin Vietnam made a breakthrough to non-fried noodles by introducing its economy brand Nissin 365 rice-based noodle manufacturers have not yet done the same thing.
