Dubai — The Italian Industry & Commerce Office in the UAE or IICUAE on Tuesday organised a road show to promote new business relations and strengthen existing bilateral ties between the UAE and Italy.

The event was aimed in particular at the promotion of investment opportunities in the Calabria region in southern Italy. The event also focused on the commercial penetration of the UAE market with emphasis on the construction food accessories and jewellery market sectors.

Speakers at the event highlighted the importance of the UAE-Calabria region project that covered four strategic sectors for Italian growth perspectives in the UAE including: the oil and gas sector food jewellery and home and furniture. The road show also aimed to promote new business relations between the UAE and the Calabria region by facilitating the investments in the region and focusing on the internationalisation of Calabrian companies.

Silvia Tropea linguistic expert at Sprint Calabria told Khaleej Times: “Our mission as Calabria Region is to promote ‘Made in Calbria’ letting our companies promote their products in the UAE market and to increase their level of exports. We see many similarities between our companies in Calabria and the companies in the UAE so this will offer many opportunities to both sides. Along with tourism oil and gas furniture jewellery and food sectors are very important to us and we hope that we can work together to promote trade in these spheres. Calabria has a lot to offer and is an excellent tourist destination. It has got several beautiful destinations and the weather is favourable all year round.”

Giovanni Favilli Consul-General of Italy in Dubai said: “2014 has not been an easy year for retail in Dubai due to the global economic situation. Globally there has been a decrease in tourists a decrease in the price of oil and this has affected the situation significantly. At the same time we believe that the lower value of the euro will boost European exports and make products more affordable for consumers in the UAE. We see trade as slowly increasing over time; we certainly don’t expect a boom but we believe that the level of European exports will grow because of the substantially lower cost of the euro.”

In addition to the UAE Favilli also highlighted the importance of other markets in the GCC. “Saudi Arabia is a very important market for Italy. We have a very long standing relationship with Egypt and we expect that the economic situation will improve there soon.”
