Turkey insists on coordination for E. Mediterranean measures

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Friday his country would not permit any measures in the Eastern Mediterranean region, particularly in the island of Cyprus, without coordination with Ankara.

"Cyprus is a Turkish protectorate under the international conventions," he told reporters in the southern city of Mersin.

Cavusoglu called on Greece to do more efforts to help the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots reach a permanent peace agreement by the end of this year.

Greece has to play a positive role and encourage the Greek Cypriots to end the division of the island as Turkey does with the Turkish Cypriots, he stressed.

The Turkish minister made the remarks after Egypt, Greece and Cyprus announced in Nicosia on Wednesday a package of arrangements on the demarcation of their maritime boundaries and the sharing of energy resources in the Eastern Mediterranean as well as economic and security agreements. (end)
