US embassy in Burundi continues to urge government to reopen universities

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) In the aftermath of protests against Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza's decision to seek a third term, the US embassy has asked the government to reopen the universities so students can return to their studies.

"We think that their plight reflects the desperate circumstances that confront Burundi as a result of a lack of dialog and by restrictions on the media and communication and freedom of expression," said State Department Acting Deputy Spokesperson Jeff Rathke to reporters.

He continued, "We certainly are urging that they have the opportunity to return to their studies and we are not requesting that those students leave the vicinity of our compound as long as they remain peaceful and calm." On Thursday evening, US officials visited approximately 600 students who were seeking shelter and security outside the walls of the US embassy in Bujumbura.

Rathke asserted, "We commend the students and the police outside the embassy for, you know, carrying out, or for behaving in a peaceful and professional manner thus far." The US called on the Burundian government to ensure that there is space for peaceful protests and respect freedom of assembly. (end) ak.rk
