EU grants Tunisia EUR 63 mln


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The European Commission granted Tunisia a donation totaling EUR 63 million to be allocated to finance various projects.

These will mainly include 15 million for judicial reforms, 28 for revising popular neighborhoods, 10 million for media, seven million for bolstering equality between men and women, and three for the protection of migrants.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Expansion Policy Johannes Hahn and Tunisian minister of investment and development Yassin Ibrahim, Minister of Housing Mohammad Al-Arfawi, and Minister for Women and Family Samira Murei.

Hahn expressed, in a statement the EU's readiness to support Tunisia in this transitional phase, which would contribute in making development model for the region, adding that "Tunisia is a strategic partner of the European Union and we have common challenges, particularly relating to immigration and terrorism." For his part, Minister Ibrahim said that the European financial support to Tunisia doubled during the years 2011 and 2013, reaching from 240 to 455 million euros compared to around 200 million euros over the past year.

The Tunisian minister explained that the road map drawn up by Tunisia for the current year is based on the support to reforms in the security, training, private, culture, and development programs sectors. (end) nm.mb
