US Senate rejects linking terrorism support to Iran sanctions relief

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US Senate rejected a measure on Wednesday that would have made President Barack Obama verify that Iran is not supporting acts of terrorism against the US in order for the country to receive sanctions relief under the P5+1 nuclear agreement.

The amendment was shot down with a vote of 54-45 indicating that some Republicans joined sides with Senate Democrats.

The measure was introduced by Republican John Barraso who said on the Senate floor, "It's important for Congress and the American people to have their say on any final deal." "It is just as important that the oversight we provide be meaningful, and that Congress state clearly that we will not tolerate Iran's support of terrorism," he added.

If the effort did pass, it would have given the US Congress a handle over an international agreement. (end) ak.ss
