Saudi- Kerry pays tributes to Prince Saud
(MENAFN- Arab News) US Secretary of State John Kerry maintains that he has not said goodbye to Prince Saud Al-Faisal who stepped down this week after almost 40 years at the helm of Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry.
'I will continue to consult with Prince Saud Al-Faisal and I appreciate his friendship based on the many hours we spent discussing the challenges facing our nations' Kerry said in a statement on Wednesday night.
He said Prince Saud had helped steer the Kingdom at a time when the world had become more complex than ever before. Prince Saud was not only the longest-serving foreign minister in the world 'but also among the wisest. He has worked with 12 of my secretary of state predecessors in the United States and has been admired by all.'
Kerry said he would miss Prince Saud 'very much' but also looked forward to working with his successor Saudi Ambassador to the United States Adel Al-Jubeir.
'I have known Foreign Minister Al-Jubeir for a long time; in fact we met when he was a young diplomat assigned to accompany me to all parts of Riyadh in 1980. We came to know each other much better since then especially during his service as the Kingdom's ambassador in Washington.'
'He is a remarkable diplomat enjoying the confidence of many US officials and his promotion emphasizes the strong historical ties between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States at a critical time. I wish him the best of luck in this new and important mission.'
US Acting State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf also paid tribute to Prince Saud. 'The alliance as we all know between Saudi Arabia and the US is historic and enduring and we will continue to maintain our close productive relationship as we work together to address a number of serious challenges.'
