EP calls for special tribunal on Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The European Parliament on Thursday called on EU member states to "seriously consider" setting up a special tribunal for the crimes committed in Syria.

The EP in a resolution condemned the acts of terrorism perpetrated by ISIL and Al-Nusra Front against the Palestinian refugee camp in Yarmouk, south Damascus, as well as siege and bombardment on the camp by the Assad regime. It expressed grave concern at the continued deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation in Syria and in particular in the Yarmouk camp and in other Palestinian camps. The EP urged all parties to the conflict to allow the international aid organisations unhindered access to the camp and called for an ad hoc visit by the European Parliament to the camp, in coordination with the UN and independently from any party to the conflict. Meanwhile, the EP in a resolution on human rights called on the Algerian authorities to ensure and guarantee the right to freedom of expression and association and peaceful assembly in the country. It said that the EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and EU member states must ensure that there is a clear and principled EU policy vis-Ø£ -vis Algeria that includes a human rights dialogue.

It urged the Algerian authorities and the EU foreign policy chief to include a strong human rights chapter in the future EU-Algeria Action Plan. (end) nk.gb
