Mogherini visits Tunisia for talks with Libyan parties

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) EU High Representative Federica Mogherini paid a surprise visit to Tunisia Thursday for talks with all Libyan parties.

A statement from her office in Brussels Thursday night said that after meeting with Bernardino Leon, the UN Special Representative for Libya, and members of the recently established EU/UNSMIL (UN Support Mission in Libya) liaison cell, Mogherini held a series of contacts and meetings with different parties taking part in the UN-led political dialogue.

This initiative was taken to strongly encourage them to work quickly for the setting up of a Government of National Unity in the coming weeks and reiterated the EU's readiness to support a new government once it is established.

The importance of the need to urgently address the common threat of terrorism and the fight against traffickers and smugglers were stressed in the discussions both for the benefit of Libya and the EU, it noted.

The EU foreign policy chief also met with the Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Taeib Baccouche, to discuss the bilateral EU-Tunisia relationship, regional challenges including the situation in Libya, migration and counter terrorism, it added. (end) nk.sd
