Qatar- Eight CMC poll candidates quit race

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Eight candidates for the upcoming fifth Central Municipal Council (CMC) election have withdrawn their candidature.

Accordingly, the nominee for constituency 27, Rabea Hamad Ajlan al-Kaabi, won the election uncontested after the other candidate, Rashid Mubarak al-Kaabi, pulled out.

The seat for constituency 1 was also won uncontested by the current CMC vice-chairman, Jassim al-Malki, even before the election campaign started.

Meanwhile, chairman of the supervisory committee in the election executive committee and director of the election department Major General Majid Ibrahim al-Khulaifi has visited voting centre No 13 at Al Muthanna Bin Haritha Independent School for Boys. It is one of the major centres with more than 3,000 voters.

He was accompanied by members of the committee while supervising an enactment of the polling process to determine the best ways to conduct and organise the upcoming election on May 13.

Major General al-Khulaifi stressed that the main aim of the visit was to put an organisational plan in place for the election day and have a precise overview of expected voter movement to guarantee a smooth process.

The 29-member CMC has a tenure of four years. Only registered citizens can contest and vote. A total of 122 candidates are contesting for 27 seats as two seats have already been decided without any contest.

Elections to the first CMC were held in 1999.
