“The UAE has been one of the first countries to promote the importance of cyber security in the Middle East” Elias Matta FireEye enterprise account manager for Qatar Bahrain and the UAE told Khaleej Times on the sidelines of the third edition of Gulf Information Security & Expo (Gisec) which concluded here on Tuesday.

“In GCC we have seen big target attacks mainly because of wealth in addition to other political reasons” Matta informed. “We have seen more than 97 per cent of cases where companies have already been compromised globally including in this region” he said.
In 2013 FireEye discovered 11 sophisticated attacks out of 13 that happened globally. “We didn’t miss the other two as they were Mac-based” he added.
There are a lot of companies which can protect customers from known threats but FireEye can protect from unknown sophisticated attacks he said.
FireEye’s unit is investigating last year’s Sony hack. Sony Pictures Entertainment was a victim of the worst known cyber attack in corporate history on November 24 2014. FireEye’s Mandiant incident response unit was called in to help the company investigate the attack and begin the process of recovery.
Recently FireEye released a new intelligence report: ‘Apt 30 and the mechanics of a long-running cyber espionage operation;. The report provides intelligence on the operations of Apt 30 an advanced persistent threat (APT) group most likely sponsored by the Chinese government.
Conducting cyber espionage since at least 2005 Apt 30 is one of the longest operating groups that FireEye tracks. The group has consistentently targeted Southeast Asia and India with targets including seven countries. In addition Apt 30’s attack tools tactics and procedures (TTPs) have remained consistent since inception — a rare finding as most Apt actors adjust their TTPs regularly to evade detection.

Advanced threat groups like Apt 30 show that state-sponsored cyber espionage affects a variety of governments and corporations across the world.
“Given the consistency and success of Apt 30 in Southeast Asia and India the threat intelligence on Apt 30 we are sharing will empower the region’s governments and businesses to quickly begin to detect prevent analyse and respond to this established threat” according to FireEye.
Analysis conducted on Apt 30’s malware reveals a methodical approach to software development similar to that of established technology businesses — an approach that aligns closely with diplomatic political media and private sector environments they intend to breach.
