FM, US and Egyptian counterparts discuss region, terrorism

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh met his US and Egyptian counterparts met in New York on Monday and agreed to pursue consultation on various issues in the Middle East.

Judeh, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri reviewed "the positive" outcome of recent nuclear talks between Western countries (P5+1) and Iran that reached a framework deal on Tehran's nuclear programme.

Judeh welcomed the Iran deal, expressing hope that a final agreement would be "an added value" in fostering regional and international peace and stability and constitute a positive approach leading to constructive communication to find solutions to many of the other divisive issues. The meeting also tackled the political and security situation in Yemen and the need for full coordination with the Saudi-led Arab coalition launching airstrikes against Yemen's Houthi rebels to restore the country's legitimate government.

The ministers also talked about challenges posed to the Palestinian-Israeli peace process and the importance of working to kickstart serious negotiations with a timeframe to achieve the internationally-backed two-state solution.

Judeh stressed Washington's role in this endeavour, adding that the turmoil in the region should not divert world attention from the Palestinian issue, the crux of the conflict in the region. He said Jordan is at the forefront in efforts to fight the "forces of darkness that hide behind the cloak of religion, which disavows them." Terrorism also figured high on the agenda of the New York meeting, where the ministers agreed to coordinate efforts in the fight against "this plague" that threatens the entire world. They also discussed Syria, Libya and Iraq and the need to enhance dialogue to find political solutions to the conflicts in the three countries.
