Omani teams clinch medals at GCC Golf Cup Championship


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) It was a mixed outing for the Omani golfers at the GCC Cup Golf Championship that concluded at the Sahara Kuwait Golf Club in Kuwait City on Saturday.

While the national senior squad failed to make it to the podium finishing a disappointing fourth the junior and the girls' teams managed to earn podium places.

The junior team comprising the Harthy brothers - Hamood and Rashad - along with Fahad al Kitani and Amjad al Toky came up with a combined total of 477 over three days (156 154 and 167) to claim a bronze medal. Bahrain boys won the gold with a score of 472 (163 149 and 160) while Qatar took the silver.

In the girls' competition where only three teams took part - Oman UAE and Kuwait - the Omanis finished third.

The Omani duo of Asma al Rashdi and Huwaida al Barwani scored 231 223 and 206 for a total of 660 while Kuwait won the title with a score of 533 (172 177 and 184).

The senior quartet of Azaan al Rumhy Hamed al Rumhy Ahmed al Balushi and Ali Hameed failed to bag a podium finish and had to be content with a fourth place finish with a total score of 992 (248 237 246 and 261.

Bahrain emerged champion with a score of 888 (223 212 224 and 229). The second place went to Saudi Arabia.

Speaking after the tournament Mundhir al Barwani chairman of the Oman Golf Committee (OGC) said 'It was good to see the junior and girls teams putting up a good fight. The level of competition was quite high. I am particularly impressed by the brave effort put in by the Omani girls considering it was their first outing at this level.'

Celebrating a podium finish Asma said 'We were happy that we were able to bag a medal on our debut. We also gained some valuable experience at the event.'

Besides Barwani the Omani team was accompanied by national coach Milo Breitenwischer and OGC vice-chairman Ahmed al Jhdhamy.
