Japan, US Issue Joint Vision Statement

(MENAFN- QNA) Japan and the United States stressed they will cooperate to deal with international threats, including actions that undermine respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The governments of the two countries made the announcement in a joint statement they issued for the summit meeting in Washington between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Barack Obama, Japan's NHK World website reported.

The statement said state actions that undermine respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity by attempting to unilaterally change the status quo by force or coercion pose challenges to the international order. It said the two countries will cooperate to deal with such threats.

The statement begins by noting that this year marks 70 years since the end of World War Two.

It said the relationship between the two countries stands as a model of the power of reconciliation: former adversaries who have become steadfast allies and who work together to advance common interests and universal values in Asia and globally.

The statement said that Tuesday's summit marks a "historic step forward" in transforming the Japan-US partnership.

On the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the two governments said they welcome the significant progress made in the bilateral negotiations and reaffirm their commitment to work together to achieve a swift and successful conclusion to the broader agreement.

They said they also welcome the new guidelines for Japan-US defense cooperation, saying these will transform the alliance, reinforce deterrence, and ensure they can address security challenges for the long term.

The statement added that the new guidelines will enable Japan to expand its contributions to regional and global security.

The two governments also say the new guidelines will enable them to work more closely on issues, including maritime security, and to partner with other countries that share their aspirations, in the region and beyond.

The statement noted a list of global challenges they will address as partners, such as climate change, poverty, epidemics and threats to global health.

On the United Nations, the statement said the United States looks forward to a reformed UN Security Council that includes Japan as a permanent member.

The two governments conclude the statement by saying they take up these challenges and opportunities, knowing that the strength and resilience of their 70-year partnership will ensure their success in the decades ahead.
