2014 brought positive changes to coffee with retail volume sales starting to increase again after several years of decline. Rising household incomes strengthened demand and coffee consumption rose amongst middle-aged and older consumers. Although standard fresh ground coffee still recorded a decline in volume terms it was not as significant as in the previous year. Growth within coffee was mainly driven by fresh ground coffee pods which was the most dynamic category and instant coffee since consumers are looking for the most practical and fastest methods of making coffee. As a result coffee increased slightly in retail volume terms in 2014 and by 2% in current value terms.

Competitive Landscape

Nestlé Hungária Kft maintained its leading position in coffee with a 27% value share in 2014. The company is a key innovator in instant coffee with its Nescafé brand and in fresh ground coffee pods with its Nespresso and Nescafé Dolce Gusto brands which ensures a leading position for the company in both categories. Douwe Egberts Hungary Zrt ranked second with 21% value share due to the company’s leading brands in fresh coffee beans and standard fresh ground coffee namely Douwe Egberts Omnia and Douwe Egberts Karaván. Tchibo Budapest Kft held the third position with a 15% value share through its Tchibo Eduscho Wiener Extra and Cafissimo brands.

Coffee is expected to show a stable performance over the forecast period with expected 1% CAGRs in both volume and constant 2014 value terms over the forecast period.
