FM meets with US, Swedish counterparts, UN Envoy to Syria


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs Nasser Judeh met with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) Security Council meetings in New York and discussed Jordanian - U.S. ties, developments in the region as well as challenges facing it.

Judeh and Kerry also reviewed the strategic partnership between Jordan and the United States (U.S.) in various fields and voiced their keenness to give them a further boost.

They also stressed the importance of concerted international efforts to fight terrorism and extremism and spread awareness in this regard.

Both sides called for a resumption of Palestinian € Israeli talks leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state as per the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In this context, Judeh said the establishment of an independent Palestinian state is a top national interest as Jordan is concerned with a solution to all final status issues that are linked to the Kingdom's vital interests.

The minister and the U.S. secretary of state also discussed the situation in Yemen, Libya and Syria as well as efforts to reach political solutions to these crises.

Kerry expressed his support to Jordan's efforts led by His Majesty the King to achieve peace and stability in the region.

Judeh also met with Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom in New York and discussed with her cooperation between Jordan and Sweden. Both ministers voiced their keenness to continue coordination and consultations on various regional issues.

They also discussed developments in the region, mainly terrorism and extremism and efforts to deal with these challenges.

Both ministers also discussed the repercussions of the Syrian crisis on Jordan and urged the international community to increase its support to the Kingdom to enable it to continue its humanitarian role towards the refugees.

The foreign minister also met with UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura and discussed the situation in Syria and De Mistura's plan to convene the Geneva 3 Conference.

Judeh voiced full support to efforts of the UN envoy and reiterated Jordan's stance that calls for a political solution to the crisis in Syria that guarantees the security and unity of the country.

The two sides also reviewed the burden being shouldered by Jordan as a result of hosting thousands of Syrian refugees and providing them with services.
