Political solution in Yemen is only solution - Kuwaiti FM

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) About UNSC Resolution 2216, he said it hands everybody all required details at this stage, adding "if the Yemenis commit to it - it covers the GCC initiative, national dialogue and calls on those who seize authorities to stop and return to political work."

On the UN chief's envoy to Yemen Jamal Benomar remarks, that the Saudi-led coalition airstrikes derailed efforts for a power-sharing deal in Yemen between warring factions, the Kuwaiti minister said that "this is his view," and that the UN official should put his efforts into bringing the Yemenis together at this crucial period.

About the joint Arab military force, he said that its formation is based on the Arab Defence Treaty which was drawn up before the creation of the GCC. This has nothing to do with the GCC, he said of the coalition.

Asked if a similar campaign was viable in Syria, he said that there were a lot more meeting and consultations ahead of the intrusion in Yemen.

The aim was to prevent Yemen from a situation a few other Arab countries, like Syria and Libya, have been through.

"Yemenis have been reasonably responsible, and managed within four years to engage in dialogue," he said.

"We were following this and were only two steps away from achieving this. But it is unacceptable under any circumstances to carry out a coup against the legitimate authority." All the steps that were made, like Decisive Storm, the GCC Initiative and the UNSCR 2216 all came after continuous in-depth discussions and consultations. "No actions were carried out overnight." These contacts have extended to Restoration of Hope now, he said. "We are allies and can all relate to the situation."

About Egypt's role in Decisive Storm, he said this was "unsurprising" and was "hoped for" by Arab states, for Cairo to have a leading focal role on security and stability in the region.

"We all saw at the Sharm El Sheikh (Arab) Summit how Egypt managed to put things in their rightful place and provide the appropriate
environment for joint work through encouraging Arab states to ratify the Arab joint defence treaty." On the role of the media during the coalition airstrikes, he said it is important as it will be with Restoration of Hope.

On the Strait of Bab Al Mandab, he said, in spite of it currently being under Yemen's control that Somalia was up to the challenge. Somalia's president has a clear cut view on a range of issues there like piracy and other affairs, to which he has involved his people on making future plans, he said.

Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled however conceded that the region will be more secure when these two countries regain their stability as the strait is not only crucial to them, but the world as a whole.
