Arabic novel festival to be held at Katara


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Katara, the Cultural Village Foundation's Arabic Novel Festival will be held from May 18 to 21 with a variety of events and forums aimed at enhancing the Arab literary scene.

On May 20, a grand celebration will be held to distribute prizes of the first round of Katara's Arabic Novel Competition.

Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, general manager of Katara, said yesterday that the festival will be highly distinctive and will take the Arabic novel into new broader horizons.

"We are having a prize, which is considered unique in its area; besides it links the novel with translation and drama. Katara has come to be a new platform in the realm of Arabic novel," he said.

More than 700 published and unpublished novels were submitted for the competition from various countries.

On the sidelines of the festival, the Katara Centre for Arabic Novel will be launched alongside an exhibition for Arabic Novel history.

An exhibition for Qatari novelists and Arabic novel forums will be held during the festival. In addition, there will be displays of feature films based on the works of great Arabic novelists and dramatists.

Dr al-Sulaiti said that a postal stamp of the award will be launched and a theatrical show will be featured, besides the launch of the electronic guide of Arab novelists and writers.

The wining works will be translated into English, French, Spanish, Chinese and Hindi. The suitable works will be converted into a work of drama and the unpublished novels will be promoted and published.
