EU envoy: Sinking of illegal immigrants boat is tragedy

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The recent deaths of more than 750 people who drowned on a boat crossing from Libya last week is a complete tragedy, Ambassador of the European Union to Jordan Joanna Wronecka said.

Speaking to Petra on Monday, Wronecka said, "As a response to this continuing crisis, the European Union will mobilize all means at its disposal to prevent further loss of life at sea and to tackle the root causes of emergency that we face, in cooperation with the countries of origin and transit.

"We are therefore committed to strengthening our presence at sea to fight the traffickers, to prevent illegal migration flows, and to reinforce internal solidarity and responsibility," she stressed.

The European official also noted that the instability in Libya creates an ideal environment for the criminal activities of traffickers, adding "We will actively support all UN-led efforts to re-establish government authority in Libya. We will also step up efforts to address conflict and instability as the key push factors of migration, including in Syria." The envoy pointed out that the emergency summit held in Brussels by EU leaders was a response to the soaring death toll, where the leaders agreed on a package of measures to tackle the escalating migrant crisis in the Mediterranean, with pledges to send in warships for rescue patrols, agreements to lay the groundwork for military action against traffickers, and most importantly, pledges to triple the funding of EU maritime operations.
