Taiwan nuclear power station catches fire
(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) A fire broke out at a nuclear power station in southern Taiwan shortly before midnight Sunday, forcing one of its two reactors to shutdown.
The fire at the third nuclear power plant in Pingtung County broke out late Sunday and was extinguished by the plant's own fire fighters 17 minutes later, the Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) said.
The plant is continuing to operate normally, though it is estimated that it will take two weeks to get the second reactor operational again.
The fire erupted inside an auxiliary electrical transformer.
Taipower said in a statement on its website that the incident had caused no radioactive contamination.
