Saudi National Guard troops arrive in Najran

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Saudi National Guard troops have arrived in the southern Najran region to participate in an ongoing Saudi-led campaign in Yemen, Saudi media has reported.

The official Saudi news agency said the troops arrived in Najran upon orders from King Salman bin Abdulaziz.

The troops arrived to protect the southern border of Saudi Arabia against any potential threats side by side with other Saudi army troops, the agency said.

On April 21, King Salman ordered National Guard troops to participate in an ongoing Saudi-led campaign against Yemen's Shiite Houthi group.

However, a few hours later, the Saudi-led coalition command announced the end of the campaign after 27 days of airstrikes against the positions of the Houthi group across Yemen.

Late last month, Saudi Arabia and several other Arab states began striking € from air € Houthi positions across Yemen.

Saudi Arabia says the strikes come in response to appeals by embattled Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi € currently in Riyadh- for help against the Houthis, who overran capital Sanaa late last year and advanced on other provinces.

Yemen has remained in turmoil since 2011 when a popular uprising forced ex-President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down a year later.
