Egyptian dies over possible water poisoning

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) A 54-year-old man died in Egypt's Nile Delta province of Sharqiya on Saturday, one day after being hospitalized for possible water poisoning, a Health Ministry official has said.

"Ahmed Kamal, 54, died in hospital on Saturday after he fell into coma," the official, requesting anonymity, told The Anadolu Agency.

He said the deceased had suffered liver and respiratory problems his death, adding that tests were being made to know the cause of his demise.

On Friday, some 586 local residents in Sharqiya were admitted to hospitals after suffering what their relatives suspect was poisoning induced by tainted tap water.

Relatives said the victims had vomited and experienced diarrhea, most likely caused by tainted tap water.

Mosque preachers in Sharqiya's Ibrahimia city, meanwhile, used loudspeakers to warn residents against drinking tap water.

The government said earlier that tap water samples collected from the area had been shown to have nothing to do with the rash of illnesses.

Egypt's water and drainage networks are poorly maintained.

Recent months have seen mounting complaints about water contamination across the country.
