Guadalajara Dubai Film Market goes to Cannes

(MENAFN- Arab Times) LOS ANGELES April 16 (RTRS): In further strategic growth Cannes Film Market will link with both Mexico's Guadalajara Festival and the Dubai Festival to stage two new pics-in-post showcases at its 2015 edition: Guadalajara Goes to Cannes and Dubai Film Market Goes to Cannes.

Building on the success of Buenos Aires Lab Goes to Cannes part of Buenos Aires' Bafici Fest which will celebrate its third edition this May the 2015 Cannes Festival will triple its works-in-progress spread giving a crucially focused stage to two of the world's building film production regions.

'After the success of BAL from 2013 the plan was to offer the same platform to other parts of the world and to give a wider choice to the industry professionals who have attended BAL' said Cannes Film Market director Jerome Paillard.

'Arabic countries have raised film productions levels and the interest of films produced due to their political context and the region's film education initiatives' Paillard said.

The Cannes Film Market has a longtime relationship with Dubai having organized Producers' Network events there in the past he added.

Running Monday May 18 the Dubai Film Market will feature two titles 'The Curve' and 'Madina' both backed by Jordanian producer Rula Nasser Imaginarium Films a new talent hub in the region plus 'Eclipse' from Tunisia's Fares Naanaa and Lebanese Maryann Zehil's 'The Other Side of November.'

Minibus road movie 'The Curve' from Jordanian first-timer Rifqi Assaf is co-produced by Mohamed Hefzy's Film Clinic one of Egypt's most prestigious production houses. Helmed by Omar Sharqawi and supported by the Danish Film Institute 'Madina' centers on a man's harrowing return to his homeland.

Chronicles

Backed by Habib Attia's Cinetelefilms one of Tunisia's top indie production houses 'Eclipse' (aka 'A Full Moon Night') chronicles the disintegration of a marriage. 'November' is the third feature from the Lebanon-born and now Quebec-based Zehil who broke through with 2006's 'From My Window Without a Home.' A fifth showcase title has still to be chosen.

Unspooling Wednesday May 20 Guadalajara Goes to Cannes marks the Cannes Film Market's second Work in Progress from Latin America with the Buenos Aires Film Lab drawing half its titles from Argentina half from the rest of Latin America. 'It's highly interesting to have two different perspectives with Guadalajara films taking in somewhat more Mexico and Central America and quite possibly a different range of projects' Paillard said.

Currently taking place at Bafici titles for Buenos Aires Lab Goes to Cannes unspools Tuesday May 19. Judging by the selection of titles BAL will be spoilt for choice.

The Goes to Cannes series also acts as 'double filter' a selection of events' selection offering the creme de la creme taking place as industry professionals begin to relax a touch as the Cannes Film Festival hits its second half he added.

Per Paillard Guadalajara and Dubai Film Market Goes to Cannes will maintain the Buenos Aires Lab's tried-and-tested format of brief introductions from filmmakers and then 10-to-15 minutes film extracts in showcases lasting not much more than one hour to 90 minutes.

LOS ANGELES: Philippe Garrel's 'In the Shadow of Women' has been chosen to open the Directors' Fortnight sidebar on May 14 at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.

Clotilde Courau Stanislas Merhar and Lena Paugam star in Garrel's 25th feature a tale of romantic betrayal centered around two impoverished documentary filmmakers adrift in modern-day Paris. Wild Bunch is selling the film internationally.

The selection marks a homecoming of sorts for the French auteur who appeared in the Fortnight's very first edition in 1969 with his film 'Bed.' Garrel was most recently on the Croisette with his 2008 competition entry 'Frontier of Dawn.' His two previous films 'A Burning Hot Summer' (2011) and 'Jealousy' (2013) premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival.

The Directors' Fortnight now in its 47th year was founded by the Societe des Realisateurs du Films as an independent alternative to the festival's official selection. The full program for the 2015 edition will be announced on April 21 and the sidebar will run May 14-24.
