UAE road deaths in Q1 2015 fall by 21 per cent


(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) Newly released figures from the Ministry of Interior show there were 147 road deaths in the first quarter of 2015 compared with 186 deaths in the same period last year, a fall of 21 percent, with sudden swerving the leading factor, responsible for a little over 19,8 per cent of total deaths.

Other causes of road accidents included misjudgment of road users with 12.6 per cent of the accidents, failure to observe a safe distance between vehicles (12.2 per cent), inattention with around 10.1 per cent, failing to comply with lane rules (7.9 per cent), speeding (6.7 per cent), entering a road without making sure it was clear (6.5 per cent), jumping a red light (4.3 per cent) and not giving priority to pedestrians (3.2 per cent).

Traffic-related injuries reached 1684 in the first quarter of 2015, compared with 1976 in the same period last year, a fall of 14.8 per cent.

The number of traffic accidents in the first quarter of 2015 fell by 8.1 per cent to 1232, compared with 1340 in the same period last year.
