UN appoints Al-Za'tari as deputy head of UNSMIL


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of Ali Al-Za'tari of Jordan as his new Deputy Special Representative and Deputy Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

Al-Za'tari will also serve as UN Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and Representative of the UN Development Program (UNDP), Ban's Spokesman Stephane Dujarric told the reporters Friday.

Al-Za'tari succeeds Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmad of Mauritania, who will reportedly be Jamal Benomar's successor for Yemen.

On April 15, the Special Adviser to the Secretary General on Yemen Jamal Benomar stepped down from his post and has expressed an interest in moving on to another assignment.

Ban said in an earlier occasion that he have been in consultation with Security Council members and Gulf Cooperation Council countries about his proposed replacement.

Moreover, the UN appointed Philippe Lazzarini of Switzerland as the Deputy Special Coordinator for Lebanon where he will serve as Resident Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Representative in the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL), Sigrid Kaag.
