Iraqi pres. calls for national unity to face ISIL

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The "Fierce" war launched by Iraq against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) needs national unity from all Iraqis, Iraqi President Fuad Masum said on Saturday.

In his speech during a celebration organized by the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, Masum said that warm reception of Iraqis internally displaced by the ongoing fighting - amounting to two millions - gives a significant message of national unity.

He urged all political powers to exploit the spirit of the national unity shown in receiving displaced Iraqis to achieve national reconciliation, stressing that victories over the ISIL creates an appropriate atmosphere for this reconciliation.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi said that real partnership will not be achieved without unity among all Iraqis, affirming that militias pose a direct threat to the country.

In his speech at a memorial service of the late leader of the Supreme Islamic Council, Mohammad Baqer Al-Hakim, Al-Abadi said that no one of Iraqi Sunnis fights alongside ISIL, adding "our sons in Al Anbar, Baghdad and Fallujah are fighting militants of the ISIL".

"Our duty is to protect people in Baghdad, where more than seven millions live, and the displaced from the ISIL's danger," he said, stressing that Iraqi Sunnis were received warmly by Shiite compatriots.

All people should face ISIL as it poses a threat to all Iraqis with no exception, he said, noting challenges Iraq is facing could be addressed by unity.
