UN calls on Indonesia to refrain from executing 10 prisoners

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on Indonesia to refrain from carrying out the execution of 10 prisoners for alleged drug-related crimes.

Recalling that the UN opposes the death penalty in all circumstances, Ban urged President Joko Widodo of Indonesia to "urgently consider declaring a moratorium on capital punishment" in Indonesia, with a view toward abolition, his spokesman said on Sunday night.

Under international law, if the death penalty is to be used at all, it should only be imposed for the most serious crimes, namely those involving intentional killing, and only with appropriate safeguards.

Drug-related offenses generally are not considered to fall under the category of "most serious crimes" he added.

Among the convicts, a French national of which his country has summoned the Indonesian envoy to Paris over execution, and warned of "consequences" to relations with Indonesia.
