Biodiesel Governance Not Ready For Now Government Says

JAKARTA April 24 2015— The government explains  that biodiesel mandatory management and governance is not ready for today but would be done in the next few years.

Head of Renewable Energy Development Acceleration Task Force of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resource (ESDM) William Sabandar explained that the implementation of mandatory biodiesel at 15% by mixing biofuel (fattyacidmethy ester/FAME) would not only involve the downstream activities in providing supply but also the upstream.

According to him it takes time to prepare the governance and industry to be able to support the policy so that it can be sustainable.

“Once it’s applied the government should have been ready. But the whole package is being prepared and building intitutional capacity" he said on Wednesday (4/22/2015).

William explained that it  would continue to mentor the palm oil farmer groups as well as the small scale CPO producer in terms of increasing people's capacity due to production.

“For now probably there is no land expansion the existing one is still enough until 2019. However to reach the ambitious target 25% biodiesel concentration  expansio is a must for sure.”

He ensured  that the land expansion would  not interfere with ecosystem and environment while saying that it would use more  critical land. “We will open critical land as long as it’s critical so it can be restored due to high carbon release.”

William assesses the needs of supervision by the team to maintain that the palm oil industry can continue to supply biodiesel which will produce fuel with 15 biodiesel mandatory.

B15 mandatory is contained in ESDM Minister Regulation No.12/2015 published in March 18 2015 about Biodiesel Provision Utilization and Commerce as Substitute.

ESDM Minister Sudirman Said promises that the policy can absorb domestic biodiesel production up to 5.3 million kiloliters or equal to 4.8 million tons of CPO. The implementation also can help foreign exchange saving of US$2.54 billion. Read more..
