His Highness Amir's Rep. stresses Kuwait's support to Asian-African coop.


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The State of Kuwait has adopted a policy of cooperation, backing dialogue and pushing development efforts for the prosperity of Asian and African countries, said Representative of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

This is realized through economic and investment cooperation as well as supporting development projects on the two continents, Kuwait's Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah told the Asian African Summit held in Indonesia's Bandung, on Thursday.

Leading the Kuwaiti delegation to the summit, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah said the Kuwait Development Fund was established in 1961 as an economic arm to help "all friendly and sisterly countries." His Highness the Amir's Representative stressed Kuwait's persistent efforts in support of countries hit by catastrophes and crises, by contributions channeled through regional and international humanitarian organizations.

Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, stressed in the meantime, Kuwait's support to the international efforts fighting "terrorist groups that came to threaten the whole world." He emphasized the fact that Kuwait took part in the Saudi-led "Operation Decisive Storm" in Yemen responding to an appeal by the country's legitimate leader against a group that encroached upon legitimacy.

He referred in this context to the UN Security Council recent resolution 2216 that "affirmed the international will" to defeat all forms of terrorism.

On Syria, he urged the UN and the Security Council to find an urgent political solution to the humanitarian crisis in the country, saying that the suffering of the Syrian people has aggravated due to international indifference.

However, Kuwait has hosted three conferences for Syria donors over three successive years, in a bid to help alleviate the sufferings and pains of the Syrian people, he said.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah said that out of a strong belief in the significance of cooperation and dialogue, Kuwait hosted the First Asian Cooperation Dialogue Summit, October 2012, and a year later the Third African Arab Summit.

In light of the forthcoming 2015 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), 27 April - 22 May, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah recalled a 1995 resolution to create of the Middle East a zone free of nuclear weapons. Yet, the goal has not been realized.

Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah urged more pressure on Israel to sign the NPT, hoping in the meantime that the expected agreement between Iran and the world powers would help achieve security and stability in the region.

The Asian-African Conference that wrapped up meetings today has sought to bolster South-South cooperation, and enhance the capabilities of developing nations to achieve further prosperity and peace, on the two continents.

The event was launched on 19 April 19 by senior officials in the cities of Jakarta and Bandung, followed by the a business summit, 21-22 April, and then the leaders' meeting on 22-23 April, and finally the commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of Asian-African Conference to follow on Friday.

The First large-scale Asian-African or Afro-Asian Conference-also known as the Bandung Conference was a meeting of Asian and African states, most of which were newly independent, which took place on April 18-24, 1955 in Bandung, Indonesia.
