Jordan to host Int'l conf. on Peace, Youth next August

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Jordan announced on Thursday their readiness to host the first international conference on "the Role of Youth in Making Sustainable Peace," in partnership with the UN next August.

The declaration was made by Crown Prince Al-Hussein Bin Abdullah II at an open debate on "the maintenance of international peace and security" and the role of youth in countering violent extremism and promoting peace.

Al-Hussein, the youngest person to chair a meeting of the Security Council, said that the August-planned event is aimed at enhancing the capabilities of young peace-makers in confronting extremism and terrorism.

The world is facing a formidable challenge he said, namely, terrorism and extremism, which may be the greatest challenge to world peace and security, with the youth being its prime victims.

"We are facing a disease that is threatening the entire world," he warned during his speech at the Council, noting that no country is immune from the threat of terrorism.

On his behalf, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed distress by the tragedy of young people who are conscripted, kidnapped and killed, yet impressed by young people who survive war and champion peace.

Youth organizations can help in peacebuilding, if their activities were scaled up, he stressed.

Nevertheless, Ban made it clear that the role of youth lies at the heart of international peace and security.

Along with the member state's representatives, senior officials attended the debate such as the Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, French Minister of Cities, Youth and Sports Patrick Kanner, Malaysian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Hamzah Zainuddin, Spanish Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Ignacio Ybafiez, Secretary of State for External Relation Manuel Domingos Augusto of Angola, and others.
