(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A bloody fight between two men led the Abu Dhabi Police to what is believed to be a 'prostitution ring', an Abu Dhabi court heard on Tuesday.
According to court records, the fight left one of the men critically injured after he was stabbed with a knife. In the first hearing of the trial, the court heard that the police were notified about a man lying injured in front of a villa.
The man was rushed to a city hospital, where he told the police that he was assaulted after he told the person who ran the ring that he would not solicit 'customers' for the prostitutes working under him.
The police raided the villa and arrested 12 men and nine women involved in obscene activities. All the suspects were staying in the UAE illegally.
The women reportedly told the police that the villa owner was managing the ring in partnership with another man.
The accused denied the charges levelled against them in court. They told the court that the confessions they made before the police were made under duress.
The lawyer hired by the seventh accused - the villa owner - challenged the search and arrest procedure followed by the police.
He claimed the police investigation was completed in a "short period of time".
The court, presided by Counselor Idrees bin Mansour, adjourned the case to April 29.
