EU says stance on Sudan polls won't affect ties

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) An EU delegation in Sudan said Wednesday that the European bloc's position vis-à-vis Sudan's recent general elections would not affect its relations with the Arab-African country.

Delegation head Tomas Ulicny said that the EU's commitments to the people of Sudan would not change.

In a statement, he said he was "confidant" that the EU's stance on the recent elections would not affect Europe's relations with the country.

The EU had earlier criticized the polls, saying Sudan lacked a "conducive environment" for fair elections.

Ulicny said that a Tuesday meeting with Sudanese officials at Foreign Ministry headquarters in Khartoum had featured an exchange of views about the elections.

Ulicny was one of several western diplomats summoned to the ministry on Tuesday over the EU's criticisms of Sudan's general elections.

The elections, the first to be held in Sudan since the secession of South Sudan in 2011, were conducted last week.

Incumbent President Omar al-Bashir was reported to have won the presidential election, with 14 other hopefuls lagging far behind.
