China welcomes end of Yemen air raids

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) China on Wednesday welcomed the end of a campaign of air strikes against Houthi militas in Yemen and called for political negotiations in the country, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

"We hope all sides can implement the UN Security Council resolution and initiatives of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), resume negotiations as soon as possible, find a political solution that accords with Yemen's situation and takes care of all sides' concerns, so as to bring stability and legitimate order back to Yemen at an early date," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei was quoted as saying at a press briefing in Beijing.

Hong made comments on the Saudi-led coalition's decision to end the strikes earlier on Tuesday.

The coalition has been running air raids against Houthi militias since March 26 and now says it will launch a campaign aimed at protecting civilians and fighting terrorism, resuming the political process, evacuating foreigners from Yemen and providing Yemenis with humanitarian aid.

It said the air raids had destroyed Houthi heavy weaponry and eliminated threats against Saudi Arabia and the region.
