Arab League welcomes "Operation Renewal of Hope" in Yemen


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Arab League Secretary General Nabil Al-Araby welcomed Wednesday the end of the "Operation Decisive Storm" carried out by the Saudi-led coalition against Houthi militias in Yemen and the start of the "Operation Renewal of Hope".

The command of the coalition had announced late Tuesday that it achieved its targets against Houthi militias in Yemen and would start a new action called "Operation Renewal of Hope".

In a press statement, Al-Araby appreciated, at the same time, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz's allocation of USD 274 million to the UN for humanitarian relief efforts in Yemen.

Al-Araby called for "intensifying humanitarian efforts, the reconstruction and political process in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions, the Gulf initiative and the output of comprehensive national dialogue".

He affirmed the league's full support for sincere efforts exerted by Yemen's President Abd Rabbuh Manur Hadi aiming to preserve the country's unity, sovereignty, safety and security.

The Saudi-led coalition said late Tuesday that the "Operation Renewal of Hope" will work on resuming the political process as soon as possible according to the UN Security Council Resolution 2216, the GCC initiative and its implementation mechanism, and output of the national dialogue.

It also aims to confront military movements and operations by Houthi militias and their allies, preventing them from using weapons looted from army camps or smuggled from abroad.

The Operation Decisive Storm was launched on March 26 at the behest of President Hadi with the major objective of protecting the Yemeni people and restoring the legitimate leadership in the country.
