Iraq's Pres. urges int'l community to help fight ISIL

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Visiting Iraqi President Fuad Masum has urged the international community to offer Baghdad further support in the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

"We are facing a new pattern of terrorism represented by ISIL, which calls for Islam at the time when they are the furthest from any religion or faith," Masum told a press conference with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

He stressed the dire need for serious moves against the "major virus" that has been extending to other continents, Australia, Africa and North America.

Masum voiced gratitude to the Turkish government that has been providing humanitarian and military assistance to Baghdad, training Iraqi troops to face ISIL.

For his part, Erdogan reaffirmed the necessity of a military solution against ISI on the ground, saying that airstrikes against the insurgents in Iraq and Syria have not achieved their targets.

He accused Syrian President Bashar Al-Asad of fueling terrorism, namely ISIL that came to possess heavy military equipment which the militants seized from northern Iraqi province of Mosul.

According to Erdogan, a Turkish economic team is working on promoting bilateral trade from USD 11 billion last year, to USD 20 billion.

He noted that Ankara is ready to cooperate with Baghdad in the field of power and transporting Iraqi oil to the world markets through Turkey. Meanwhile, Erdogan welcomed the announcement that the Saudi-led coalition's "Operation Decisive Strom" has ended, urging Yemenis to seek national reconciliation through negotiations.
