Parliament Speaker highlights single diplomatic discourse

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanim stressed the importance of a harmonious political discourse by the MPs and diplomats abroad as per the provisions of the constitution.

"The current parliament maintains close coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a view to brining closer the viewpoints of MPs and diplomats," he said Wednesday night.

Al-Ghanim made the comments at a dinner banquet he hosted in honor of the participants in the eighth conference of the heads of diplomatic missions abroad in the presence of Acting Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.

"MPs have right to comment on foreign policy inside the parliament hall but our diplomatic missions abroad must speak with one voice under Articles 50 and 123 of the constitution," Al-Ghanim pointed out.

On the visits of parliamentary delegations to foreign countries, he said: "It's unacceptable that such delegations send messages that could contradict the state policy." Al-Ghanim noted that the relationship between the parliament and the Foreign Ministry made remarkable advances during his tenure as shown in the close coordination between the embassies overseas and the parliamentary delegations during the numerous visits of these delegations.

He commended the country's ambassador, saying that they act as representatives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Al-Ghanim extolled Sheikh Sabah Khalid for his keenness on meeting the lawmakers on several occasions whether at the parliament or at his office to respond to whatever questions they might raise.

On his part, Sheikh Sabah Khalid said: The parliamentary diplomacy, conducted by parliamentary friendship groups, complements, and backs up, the state diplomacy." He recalled the statement of His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah at the opening ceremony of the eighth conference of heads of diplomatic missions yesterday when he attributed the country's success in addressing the numerous challenges to the unity and coherence of the internal front. "The numerous international summit conferences, hosted recently by Kuwait testified to the country's ability to contribute to the stabilization of many hotspots in the region and beyond," he added.

Sheikh Sabah Khalid voiced hope that the Kuwaiti diplomacy will continue following the footsteps of His Highness the Amir.
