Man jailed for bid to kill self in lock-up

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) A GCC citizen who tried to end his life in a police lock-up has been sentenced by a court to a year in jail.

The convict was actually sentenced to three years in jail by a criminal court for the above crime but a higher criminal court reduced the jail term to a year after the case went in appeal.

It so happened that the GCC national was taken in police remand in some case and put in a lock-up at the Capital Police.

He was kept in a special cell where he put on fire a bed-sheet and blanket.

A policeman and a suspect in some other case who was present in the police lock-up area at the time told the upper court appearing as witnesses that they saw smoke coming out of the cell of the convict and so policemen on duty rushed to his rescue.

The convict had wrapped himself up in a blanket even as it and the bed were on fire, the witnesses said.

The court reduced the sentence of three years to one considering the age of the convict and his health condition, reported Al Raya.
