72 dhows for pearling contest


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A group of 72 traditional dhows joined the fourth edition of the Traditional Pearl Diving and Fishing Contest (Senyar) launched yesterday at Katara - the Cultural Village.

A total of 720 contestants are in the fray. The organising committee has also launched several dhows to support the event.

The winners in various categories will get prizes for the largest amount of fish caught, the largest fish caught and the largest amount of oysters collected. The participants expressed their excitement and pride to take part in the contest which revives an aspect of the traditional Qatari and Gulf life from the past.

The organising committee has allowed the participation of children under 10 years for the first time. However, they have to be accompanied by a parent or a first degree relative. Also, each team has the right to include just one person from any GCC country. The competitions will go on until Saturday.
