US warns Iran against weapons shipments to Yemen

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The US government has warned Iran against sending weapons to Yemen that could be used to threaten shipping traffic in the region, US President Barack Obama said while commenting on recent reports of the presence of US ships and aircraft carriers off the Yemeni coast.

In a televised interview on Tuesday on MSNBC, Obama said the US government had sent "very direct messages" to Iran in this regard.

The president said the Iranian involvement would only complicate efforts to find a solution to the Yemen conflict, where the Houthis and government-backed fighters have been battling for months to gain control over the country.

Obama said, "What we need to do is bring all the parties together and find a political arrangement," calling on the Iranians "to be part of the solution and not part of the problem." He explained that Washington had told Iran, "If there are weapons delivered to factions within Yemen that could threaten navigation, that's a problem." The Saudi-led coalition announced on Tuesday the end of the al-Hazm Storm military operation in Yemen.
