White House "concerned" about Egyptian court sentence of Morsi

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The White House said Tuesday it was "concerned" after former Egyptian president Mohammad Morsi was sentenced to 20 years in prison without parole.

The US would not extensive comment "until we have had an opportunity to review the verdict and the basis of the verdict," press secretary Josh Earnest said during a briefing.

"All Egyptians, regardless of political affiliation, are entitled to equal and fair treatment before the law, including full respect for their rights to due process," Earnest said during a briefing.

Morsi, like all other defendants, "must be afforded the basic legal right of due process, and the United States continues to be strongly opposed to politicized arrests and detentions," Earnest said.

The United States will also continue to engage the Egyptian government on its political trajectory and to raise human rights and political reform issues, he said, adding, "There should be no doubt that these issues remain significant bilateral priorities for the United States."
