Qatar- Companies supply domestic workers on hourly basis

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Some manpower agencies have nexus with cleaning companies and they are supplying maids and other domestic workers on hourly, weekly and monthly basis to families and individuals in need in violation of the country's laws, claim people. They say there is, thus, the need for the authorities concerned to frame laws to regularise the business and make the charges uniform.

In the absence of a law companies supplying part-time workers charge exorbitantly and those needing their services are forced to pay through their nose.

Hourly charges for maids can vary from QR35 to QR50 and can even go up to QR150 depending on the urgency of a family or individual in need. Maids are mostly needed for house cleaning work and they are preferred by families, particularly Qatari families.

Cleaning companies are not permitted to recruit women workers so they rely on sourcing female workers from manpower agencies.

Monthly charges for a maid can go up to QR5,000 and beyond although a permanent maid costs no more than QR1,500 a month.

Some companies charge for maids on hourly basis even through the contract is for a week or month. And, ironically, part-time work by maids is illegal.

Saleh Al Othmani, a citizen, told Al Sharq in remarks published yesterday that some manpower agencies have nexus with cleaning companies and they provide them maids.

The cleaning companies assign these maids for part-time work to families and individuals and collect hourly charges on their behalf. The maids deployed for such work are the ones who have been rejected by families, said Al Othmani.

He said the demand for part-time maids and other domestic workers is so much that one needs to place request with a cleaning company much in advance. "And there is no guarantee that the company will keep its word," he said.

Another citizen, Khalifa Al Mohsana said that manpower agencies make good use of maids who are rejected by families by making them work on a part-time basis through cleaning companies. Another national Ahmed Al Hilal said that sometimes charges for a maid-cleaner could go up to QR5,000 and even beyond.
