Qatar- Technical preparations for WPS complete: Officials


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar will mark the Labour Day with a host of activities, including explaining to large numbers of low-income workers how an electronic salary payment system which is in the offing will work and benefit them.

Senior officials of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs told reporters yesterday that all technical preparations to launch the online wage payment mode, to be known as Wage Protection System (WPS), were completed.

"What is awaited is just the launch. Companies have been given six months to be part of WPS. We are waiting for the deadline to end," a senior official said.

Khalid Al Ghanem, head of Labour Inspection Department, Mohamed Shaheen Al Assiri, from Occupational Health and Safety Department, Jaber Al Marri, head of Occupational Health and Safety, and Rashid Mubarak Al Muhannadi, Public Relations Specialist, at the ministry, addressed a news conference to announce the preparations to mark the Labour Day on May 1 and the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 28.

The officials said that since May 1 is a Friday they will be marking both the Labour Day and World Safety at Work Day on April 28.

Events will be held on the occasion in the Industrial Area where 500 workers from 100 companies that have the best track record are being invited to attend.

Entertainment programs will be held as also the workers will be told about their rights as enshrined in the labor law as part of the events.

Expatriate community leaders and officials from the National Human Rights Committee will also be invited to attend.

Videos and still photographs of worksite inspections conducted by the labor department will be displayed at the event, the officials said.

In reply to questions, the officials said that summer work timings for construction sites will be implemented as usual from June 16 and will last until August 31.

They said that construction and contracting companies will be asked to make space at worksites where workers could take rest.
