Omani girls upbeat on GCC Cup golf debut


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Omani girls Huwaida al Barwani and Asma al Rashdi sounded confident of a good show in the GCC Cup Golf Championship in Kuwait City Kuwait as a nine-member Omani squad departed on Monday for the April 22-25 tournament.

The trip marks the first time that an Omani girls team is participating in any international golf competition. Besides the girls' category the GCC Cup will feature senior and junior categories.

The Omani girls are upbeat about their chances in Kuwait.

Before leaving Muscat Huwaida said ' I am thrilled that finally I have got a chance to represent my country in a competition abroad. I hope to perform well in Kuwait and gain some experience as this is our first GCC-level tournament.'

Asma said 'I consider myself very lucky that I am representing my country at the highest level. It's now time that I proved myself. I will give my best. The competition will be tough I know but I will have to fight it out.'

The two golfers - both 15 year olds - thanked their coach Milo Breitenwischer who is travelling with the Omani contingent. On the two girls' progress Breitenwischer said 'They are talented and they are well prepared. I am hoping for the best.'

The girls' event will feature a total of eight competitors from three countries - Oman UAE and Qatar.

Besides the two girls the Omani delegation comprises four players in the senior team - Azaan al Rumhy Hamed al Rumhy Ali Hameed and Amjad al Toky; and three players - Hamood al Harthy Rashad al Harthy and Fahad al Kitani - in the junior squad.
