Ban deplores targeting people on religious basis


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Monday condemned in the strongest terms the "barbaric killing" of a number of Ethiopian Christians by individuals affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) in Libya.

Ban's spokesman Stephane Dujarric told the press that the Secretary General deplores the targeting of people on the basis of their religious affiliation.

Reaffirming that the ongoing UN-facilated dialogue being the best chance for Libyans to overcome the crisis in their country, Dujarric noted Ban's encourages the parties to make the necessary compromises to reach an agreement.

"Only by working together will Libyans be able to start building a state and institutions that can confront terrorism," he said.

Nevertheless, Ban expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives as a result of this act and to the Government of Ethiopia.

A video released by ISIL holding two groups of captives at Fazzan and Barka provinces, where they beheaded them in reference to their religion.
